The EU Blue Card is a special type of residence permit in European Union countries (excluding Denmark and Ireland) for highly skilled workers from non-EU countries. The Blue Card provides a range of benefits, which are determined by each country within the framework of the overall EU directive. A Blue Card holder can move for work from one EU country to another, while accumulating the necessary years to qualify for EU long-term resident status.
On 16 May 2024, the Luxembourg parliament adopted new rules making it easier to obtain an EU Blue Card. The EU Blue Card now has a lower salary threshold, reduced from 1.5 times the average annual gross salary to just the average salary, which currently amounts to €58,968. Additionally, applicants now need only a six-month employment contract instead of a year. The new law also benefits third-country nationals who are family members of EU citizens.
